Two Years After the Owo Church Massacre: A Tragedy That Will Never be Forgotten
June 5, 2022, will forever be etched in the minds of Nigerians as a day of unspeakable horror. On that fateful day, St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, was attacked by gunmen, resulting in the loss of at least 40 precious lives and leaving over 70 worshipers injured.
Today, as we mark the second anniversary of that heinous crime, the wounds are still fresh, and the pain still lingers. The attack, which occurred on a day when Christians gathered to celebrate the Pentecost, was a stark reminder of the evil that exists in our world.
The victims of the attack were innocent men, women, and children who had gathered to worship and celebrate their faith. They were brutally murdered in a place of worship, a sacred space that was supposed to be a sanctuary. The trauma and grief caused by that senseless act of violence continue to reverberate in the lives of the survivors, the families of the victims, and the entire community.
In the aftermath of the attack, there were widespread condemnations and outrage across the country. The government promised to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice. While some arrests were made, the masterminds behind the attack are yet to be brought to book.
As we remember the victims of the Owo church massacre, we are reminded of the importance of unity, peace, and tolerance in our society. We must continue to work towards a Nigeria where such tragedies are never allowed to happen again.
We honor the memories of those who lost their lives in that senseless attack and pray for the continued healing and recovery of the survivors. May their souls continue to rest in peace, and may we never forget the sacrifice they made in the service of their faith.
